The Sabian Symbols are the most mystical system in the Moira library. They are 360 images, one for every degree of the zodiac, channeled in 1925 by a clairvoyant named Elsie Wheeler in a park in San Diego. She did not know astrology. She simply saw an image for each degree, and the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones wrote them down.
What makes them remarkable is how specific they are. Each degree has a vivid, particular image, like a scene from a film. And when you look at the degree of your Sun, your Moon, your Rising sign, the image often feels uncannily apt. Like someone looked at your soul and described it in a single frame.
How the Sabian Symbols Work
Each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac (0 degrees Aries through 29 degrees Pisces) has one image. The image is a specific, visual scene. Some are beautiful. Some are strange. Some are haunting. All of them are evocative.
When Moira calculates your chart, we identify the exact degree of your Sun, Moon, Rising, and all ten planets. Each one has a Sabian Symbol. Together, they give your chart a narrative quality that astrology alone does not provide. They are the story inside the data.
Examples of Sabian Symbols
This is the Sabian Symbol for 7 degrees Libra. It speaks of nurturing and protection, of caring for what is vulnerable while fending off threats. Someone with this Rising sign might naturally take on a protective, nurturing role in their community, keeping their people safe while nurturing their growth.
This is the Sabian Symbol for 7 degrees Pisces. It is an image of something sacred revealed by a beam of light in a misty, oceanic landscape. It speaks of finding meaning in the mist, of faith revealed through uncertainty, of something enduring and luminous emerging from the fog of the unknown.
This is one of the more startling Sabian Symbols. It speaks of sudden transformation, of the fragility of life, of the moment where everything changes in an instant. It is not literal. It is symbolic. It might speak to a life theme of sudden shifts, of moments that change everything, of the thin line between presence and absence.
The History
In 1925, the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones brought Elsie Wheeler, a clairvoyant who used a wheelchair, to Balboa Park in San Diego. He handed her cards with degree numbers, one at a time, in random order. For each one, she saw an image. Jones wrote them down. Over several sessions, they recorded all 360.
What is remarkable is that the symbols are consistent across every chart Jones tested them on. The degree of your Sun always has the same image. The degree of your Moon always has the same image. And the images, when you read them for your own chart, often feel like they were written specifically for you.
Why this matters: Astrology gives you the data: your Sun is at 6 degrees Pisces. The Sabian Symbol gives you the story: "Illuminated by a shaft of light, a large cross lies on rocks surrounded by sea and mist." The data tells you where the planet is. The symbol tells you what it means. You need both.
How to Use Sabian Symbols in Real Life
1. Read the symbol for your Sun, Moon, and Rising
These are the three most important placements in your chart, and their Sabian Symbols are the three most important images. Read them. Sit with them. Let them land. Do not analyze them immediately. Let them work on you like poetry works on you: through feeling, not through logic.
2. Look for the story connecting them
If your Sun symbol is about light in darkness and your Moon symbol is about transformation and your Rising symbol is about protection, you have a story: someone who finds light in darkness, who transforms through that finding, and who protects others on the same journey. The symbols weave together into a narrative.
3. Use them for contemplation, not prediction
The Sabian Symbols are not predictions. They are images for contemplation. They give you something to sit with, to wonder about, to return to. They are not fortune telling. They are soul telling.
4. Let them add depth to your other systems
The Sabian Symbol for your Sun degree connects to your Gene Key, your Human Design gate, your numerology Life Path. They are all reading the same moment. The Sabian Symbol adds the poetic, narrative layer that makes the other systems feel personal and alive.
What Moira Does With the Sabian Symbols
Moira has all 360 Sabian Symbols from the original Marc Edmund Jones source. We calculate the exact degree of every planet in your chart and pull the corresponding symbol. We show you the symbols for your Sun, Moon, Rising, and all ten planets. And we weave them into your reading alongside your astrology, Human Design, Gene Keys, numerology, and Chinese zodiac.
What makes Moira different: We are the only platform that combines all 360 Sabian Symbols with the other seven systems in one reading. No other app does this. The Sabian Symbols add the poetic, narrative layer that turns a data report into a story. Your story.
