Vedic Astrology

The sidereal wisdom of ancient India. Nakshatras, dashas, and the Moon as your guiding light.

Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish (meaning "science of light"), is the oldest continuously practiced astrological system in the world. It originated in India over 5,000 years ago and is still practiced by hundreds of millions of people today. While Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on the seasons), Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on the actual positions of the stars).

The difference matters. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the tropical zodiac has drifted about 24 degrees from the actual star positions. Your Western Sun sign might be Pisces, but your Vedic Sun sign is Aquarius. Same sky. Different measuring stick. Both are valid. Both tell you something different about yourself.

Western astrology tells you who you are in relation to the seasons. Vedic astrology tells you who you are in relation to the stars. You need both.

What We Calculate

Moira calculates your Vedic chart using the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the most widely used ayanamsa in Vedic astrology. Here is what your Vedic reading includes:

Your Sidereal Planetary Positions

All nine planets (the seven classical planets plus Rahu and Ketu, the north and south nodes of the Moon) are calculated in their sidereal positions. Each planet is in a sign, at a specific degree, and in a specific nakshatra.

Your Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions)

The nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. The Moon travels through one nakshatra per day, completing the cycle in 27 days. Your Moon nakshatra is considered the most important placement in Vedic astrology. It tells you your temperament, your emotional nature, and your life path in a way that Western astrology cannot.

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a deity, a symbol, and a specific energy. Your Moon nakshatra is your Vedic identity. It is the equivalent of your Sun sign in Western astrology, but it speaks to a deeper, more instinctual layer of who you are.

Your Vimshottari Dasha

The Vimshottari Dasha system is unique to Vedic astrology. It is a 120 year planetary cycle that tells you which planet is ruling your life right now and for how long. Each dasha period lasts between 6 and 20 years, and the sequence is determined by your Moon nakshatra at birth.

Knowing your current dasha is like knowing the weather for the next decade. If you are in a Jupiter dasha, expansion and opportunity are the theme. If you are in a Saturn dasha, discipline and structure are the focus. If you are in a Rahu dasha, change and disruption are the energy. Moira calculates your birth dasha, the balance remaining at your birth, and the sequence of dashas that will unfold throughout your life.

Rahu and Ketu (The Nodes)

Vedic astrology places special emphasis on the lunar nodes, Rahu (north node) and Ketu (south node). Rahu represents your desires, your obsessions, and the areas of life where you are hungry for more. Ketu represents liberation, detachment, and the areas of life where you are naturally gifted but may need to let go. Together, they tell the story of your karmic path.

What makes Moira different: Moira is the only platform that offers both Western AND Vedic astrology alongside Human Design, Gene Keys, numerology, Chinese zodiac, and Sabian Symbols. You see your tropical chart and your sidereal chart side by side. You see your Western Sun sign and your Vedic Sun sign. You see your nakshatra and your Sabian Symbol. Seven systems. One reading. The true picture from every angle.

How to Use Vedic Astrology in Real Life

1. Know your Moon nakshatra

Your Moon nakshatra is the most important placement in Vedic astrology. It tells you your temperament, your emotional patterns, and your instinctual nature. If you have struggled with feeling like your Western Sun sign does not quite fit, your Vedic Moon nakshatra might explain why.

2. Track your Vimshottari Dasha

Your current dasha tells you the theme of this period of your life. If you are in a Saturn dasha, this is a time for discipline, structure, and building something lasting. If you are in a Jupiter dasha, this is a time for growth, expansion, and wisdom. Knowing your dasha helps you work with the current instead of against it.

3. Understand the difference between Western and Vedic

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons). Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions). Your Western Sun sign and your Vedic Sun sign are likely different. Both are correct. They are measuring different things. Western tells you who you are in the context of the Earth's seasons. Vedic tells you who you are in the context of the cosmos.

4. Pay attention to Rahu and Ketu

Rahu shows you where you are hungry, where you want more, where you need to grow. Ketu shows you where you are naturally gifted, where you have already mastered something, and where you need to let go. The tension between them is the tension of your karmic path. Rahu pulls you forward. Ketu pulls you back. The balance is the journey.

Why Moira Offers Both Western and Vedic

Most astrology apps offer one or the other. Co-Star, CHANI, and TimePassages offer Western. Moonly offers Vedic. Nobody offers both alongside five other systems.

Moira offers both because they see different things. Western astrology sees your personality through the lens of the seasons. Vedic astrology sees your nature through the lens of the actual stars. Your Western chart tells you who you are. Your Vedic chart tells you why you are here. You need both to see the full picture.

The 7 connection: Seven is the number of cosmic completeness. The 7 classical planets that both Western and Vedic astrology were built on. The 7 days of the week, each named after a planet. By offering both Western and Vedic, Moira returns to the original 7. The 7 that every ancient civilization studied. The 7 that started it all.
